Retinal examinations, also called ophthalmoscopy or funduscopy, allow your doctor to see at the back of your eye, including the retina, optic disc, and the underlying layer of blood vessels that nourish the retina. Before your doctor can see these structures, your pupils must usually be dilated with eye drops. When your doctor beams light into your eye, this keeps the pupil from shrinking. A direct examination is used. Your eye doctor uses an ophthalmoscope to shine a beam of light through your pupil to see the back of your eye.
